Another thing you didn't get is that the Queen's Gate is so high because this part of the castle was built on top of the former motte of the previous castle. All this is written down in any book you might read on Caernarvon. But, you're perhaps more of a first impression guy, not too much into reading.

Actually those "missing internal rooms" in the courtyard have never been built: Caernarvon is notoriously an unfinished castle. These are places where they could anchor the new walls once they build them, but they never had the chance. I know you're not much into books, but you might have get that by reading a random book on Caernarvon castle or on Edwardian castles in Wales. Otherwise nice presentation!

If you want to fight off attackers from the top of a tower, how about just having floors, with a hole in the floor and a ladder that can be pulled up behind you...

It's crazy how Shad is a proponent for A.I. and spends 25 minutes raging and ranting about a video written, narrated, and filled images made by A.I. I've been a long time subscriber and can generally accept that other people have different opinions than myself, so it's not like I'm going to unsubscribe now. However, just considering the harm unregulated A.I. brings from the example of this video when brought to its logical conclusion. A.I. has stolen the jobs of writers, voice actors, and artists and, has misled the public on historical fact and discredited countless historians dating back centuries. Three fields of artistic expression (which already hold less value in modern society and are historically known for being comically underpaid despite the impact art has had on human culture for millennia), one of which Shad himself identifies, and the already rapidly depleting trust our modern societies have for authorities in the fields of science and history, of which Shad also identifies, have all been further ruined by the release of this video and the A.I. behind it. Yet, somehow he claims himself to be an advocate for A.I. So, either Shad is truly ignorant of the harm unregulated technology like this can bring or, fully endorses the neo-dark age of humanity (or I guess like, the world of Cyberpunk 2077). (tl;dr: A.I. bad. L take Shad)

The german term "Zwinger" for that open "court-like" feature comes from the verb "zwingen" - to force somebody or something into a situation or a place - normally a rather unfavourable one. Functioning like a cage to trap an animal, the word "Zwinger" today is used als the term for a dog pound. Additionally, the verb "bezwingen" means to overwhelm an opponent by force.

Ludvik XIV (1643-1715) It is said he bathed only 3 times in his life but it's probably more, he had private baths and was using it on doctor orders. If the kings had such standard of hygiene, what about every one else?

About turning the lightsaber on and off mid combat, there was a lightsaber style that did that. In the lore they said that it was incredibly dificult to master and the jedi forbid it because it was considered too brutal

Wall carpets would have also affected the acoustics of a castle - you can even hear it in the video audio - there's a lot more reverb that makes everything Shad says sound kind of echo-like, while in the room where there were wall-carpets, it almost sounded like he's recording in a studio. Whether that was intentional or not, I have no idea. But I doubt the medieval people were dumb enough not to notice the difference.

Spectacular video, Shad! I'm not usually one for the long form content, but your exploration of this castle was a good watch. I loved hearing about the history of the castle from Ben and your explanations of different features were very interesting.

Im a new subscriber, love your content, i love history and castles etc, i would love to do what you do and visit all different castles, keep up the good work 👏

From personal experience camping with a haversack or shoulder bag type thing is only really comfortable for a maximum of three days and even then I use comfortable very lightly even a few pounds on one shoulder will hurt your back after a while. Belt pouches are definitely a great method of weight distribution but only works for a limited amount of gear. One of the best non-backpack methods I’ve come across is the lengthwise blanket roll across the whole body but this can get pretty hot on the trail. I made a wooden frame pack and that is probably the best option for multi day camping which I realize was probably not a very common thing in the time period in question. I made the wooden frame so it can be tucked into a belt for weight distribution which is a game changer for long hikes. An option for carrying loot is making basically a stretcher with two long poles to be carried between two people I’ve done this in the desert with water for extended trips in dry areas and while obviously very encumbering you could reasonably carry a small chest of gold. The over abundance of gold in rpgs is something that should change though it’s boring loot even gems are way more potentially interesting as loot. Speaking on weight, I have been backpacking all my life and do trail work with axes and saws in the backcountry now and consider myself an “ultra-heavy” hiker but anything over 60 lbs is encumbering with modern gear with a pack with a good harness, no hip belt like you’d see in history nearly cuts this number in half over any amount of distance over like a few miles. For ttrpgs I like the way Cairn handles inventory with item slots essentially acting as an hp pool. Grew up playing D&D while backpacking with my family it’s a good light game to bring if you don’t carry rules or just a few reference sheets and some dice.

Great presentation! Love your tour of real castles! 'Book of Hours' is I think the general name of books with prayers Shadiversity referred to at 53:00. They were luxury items, often lavishly decorated and illustrated. The illustrations are sometimes a great source for castles and medieval society (see 'Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry for example).

For those going to Warwick Castle should also check out St. Mary’s Church. Has as much history as the castle. Well worth a visit.
